It became the Hinds County seat after an 1829 act of the legislature, and it still has a county courthouse today, serving the county's Second Judicial District. The Greek Revival courthouse on the square was built from 1857 to 1859.
The historic square, with its water tower and mural, is the heart of town. The town is also home to a long list of homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, from the old Illinois Central depot to houses on Dupree Street and Port Gibson Road.
Hinds Community College
Raymond is the site of Hinds Community College's main campus, on East Main Street. The campus has eight residence halls, a wellness complex and athletics, and the Marie Hull Gallery in the art building is open to visitors during the school year.
